We Don't Live in Church
Salt and Light.
We join hands.
We sing.
We pray.
We encourage one another.
Here, we are all God's children, fearfully and wonderfully made. The News is Good.
We listen to sermons about relationships with Christ rather than religion.
We listen to sermons about doing spiritual warfare.
We believe in healing.
We believe in miracles.
We believe in the Oneness of the church body, all one in Christ.
Then I walk out the doors and remember that we don't live here.
Wormwood and darkness.
We parse the Bible to suit our needs yet let veterans sleep on the street and ignore theirs.
We judge a man for speaking his mind but elect another one despite having committed a crime.
We condemn a poor man for hating the law yet we remain silent when a rich man hates his brother.
We tear down those who do not think as we do.
Here, we don't care about our shared history, haunts, and hurts. That news is fake.
We read tweets about collusion, bad hombres, and low IQ individuals.
We listen to demagogues stir up and heat the cauldron of hatred.
We can't believe our country is this wounded.
We can't believe that it will ever get better.
We embrace the oneness of chaos, all of us scattering to the winds like those at Babel.
We live here. We don't live in church.
Or maybe, the church doesn't live in us.
We join hands.
We sing.
We pray.
